DYWH - THE IRISH SPA EDIT
THE SPA EDIT
OUR FAVOURITE IRISH LUXURY SPA BREAKS
As much as we love jetting or sailing off to overseas destinations there is something so thrilling to packing a bag, filling up the car and hitting the road to visit a decadent spa hotel right here in Ireland.
We have so many amazing resorts here that we love to visit so we thought we would share them with you - in no particular order!
1. LOUGH ESKE CASTLE - DONEGAL
Approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes from Belfast, Lough Eske is up there with one of our ultimate spa break destinations. Even though it’s essentially on our doorstep, when you visit you feel a world away from the normality of day to day life.
We first visited Lough Eske Castle around 5 years ago and loved it so much that have been returning yearly ever since. Recently named in Condé Nast's Ireland's top ten luxury hotels 2018, the resort is a beauty to behold. The hotel is a merging of old and new, with classic rooms in the actual castle itself and more modern rooms situated in an annex towards the rear and a handful of garden suites. We always recommend booking one of the gardens suites; essentially little bungalows that are directly opposite the spa. This means you can nip across to the pool and thermal suite without having to do the awkward bathrobe and slippers dash through a bustling lobby.
The hotel has a full service spa using ESPA products (some of our favourites), a well appointed thermal suite and a large pool. Once you have removed all sign of all toxins from your body you can head down to Donegal Town and start to replenish your supplies. Depending on when you decide to go there are special room rates available but generally rooms run from €217 per night for courtyard room and €372 for a garden suite. Bookings can be made here.
2. THE EUROPE - KILLARNEY
The Europe went largely unnoticed on our radar until we stumbled across it while researching hotel stays in Killarney. Situatuted overlooking the lakes of Killarney, the Europe is a prime piece of luxury real estate that ticks all the boxes. The spa is phenomenal, offering a larger than life thermal suite, a huge inside outside pool and decadent treatments featuring ESPA products (notice a theme here). The rooms are incredible and all lake view rooms come with balcony, perfect for that morning coffee. The grounds offer an incredible opportunity for walking, check out the stone pier, pure photographic heaven!
Of course a spa weekend wouldn’t be complete without eating and drinking and we chose to dine at at the resort’s Brasserie. The food was incredible, as was the wine - but that was quickly forgotten about the next morning with an 8 am dip in the outdoor pool. The hotel closes December through January - rooms start at €295 for a Golfside Twin, available to book here.
3. THE G - GALWAY
We love to visit Galway and one of those reasons is this hotel. The G is a relatively modern hotel and this can be seen instantly from the design and the interior decor. The rooms are out of this world and the spa was a sensory delight. We love that feeling of being entirely immersed in a spa and this spa almost had a feel of a sensory deprivation chamber as it was so dark and calming. We loved the pools and the sauna was incredible - just as hot as we like it. The spa was well equipped with a large variety of treatments on offer, again using ESPA products. Book your stay here.
4. LOUGH ERNE - ENNISKILLEN
Lough Erne is the only spa hotel in our edit to be located in Northern Ireland. The resort is situated in a 600 acre site overlooking the Fermanagh lakes with The Faldo golf course on site as well as a luxury spa. The hotel offers rooms within the main building but also individual 2/3 bedroom lodges overlooking the lakes, which we absolutely adore. The feeling of space and freedom that these private lodges offer is very hard to beat.
The spa at Lough Erne is heralded as a Thai Spa and the theming is actually quite well realised. I stepped out of my comfort zone here and ordered some quite interesting treatments, some of which involved an electrical current being applied to my face - not for the feint hearted, but definitely worth it; my skin looked fantastic as a result! They use Elemis products in the spa and it was a nice change from ESPA. We ate that night in the Catalina Restaurant, headed by Noel McMeel - this is an experience that is not to be missed! Bookings can be made here.
5. CARTON HOUSE - KILDARE
Carton House Resort Kildare is located approx 20 minutes outside of Dublin city centre which makes it a little oasis just outside of the city. Situated on 1,110 acres the the resort ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of people. There is of course the historic mansion, 2 championship golf courses, 3 eateries, a leisure centre, a spa, tennis courts and much more - it really does appear to have it all. We love staying here as its so close to Dublin City centre but also a short drive from Kildare Premium outlets - Spa and shopping? Sign us up! The spa here is beautifully appointed, with some of the most incredible treatments we’ve ever had. So much in-fact, that we regularly consider travelling down for the day for a little day spa experience - guilty pleasures! Bookings can be made here.
